The Fishing
Over 50 different species can be caught in the pristine waters surrounding Groote Eylandt. We use 7 and 8 metre customised centre console Haines Hunter Prowlers, providing maximum comfort for anglers. No time will be wasted getting you to the water each day with the boats moored right in front of the Lodge on our floating jetty. Quality Shimano fishing tackle will be provided for all guests on a replace if lost or damaged basis. Some fly tackle will be available, however anglers may prefer to bring their own favorite customised outfit.
Just some of the types of fishing on offer:
Barramundi, commonly know as Barra and scientific name of Lates Calcarifer. The Barramundi is undoubtedly one of Australia's premier tropical sportfish, growing to well over a metre in length. These predatory fish are prolific in NT waters and are well known for their hard hitting strikes.
The fishing at Groote Eylandt offers anglers a unique opportunity to experience catching many different species of fish. It is not often you can spend one day targeting Barramundi in estuaries or around rocky headlands and then spend the next day offshore targeting game fish such as the majestic Sailfish and the mighty Black Marlin.
Groote Eylandt offers anglers the opportunity to experience some amazing reef fishing sessions. The system surrounding Groote consists of large patches of coral reefs, drop offs and bommies, all ideal habitats for reef dwellers. Fishing for reef fish is generally done using baits or by using weighted soft plastics.
The surrounding islands offer excellent fishing grounds for fly anglers. With a maximum tidal movement of only 2 metres the water clarity offers fly fishing enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy some great sight fishing on the flats.
Some of the best fishing action can be had by casting poppers to the bommies, rocky outcrops and coral reefs. Fish are generally schooling around these structures and they simply cannot resist the action of a popper being worked across the surface or retrieved at high speeds. Jigging has also proven to be highly successful and enjoyable for many of these species.
